Nuestra línea de investigación estudia aspectos de la conexión que existe entre la obesidad y las patologías que se le asocian (tales como diabetes y enfermedad cardiovascular), que actualmente constituyen un grave problema de salud pública. El objetivo a largo plazo es establecer una forma de intervenir en la relación obesidad-enfermedades asociadas, y así poder eventualmente disminuir las consecuencias cardiovasculares y metabólicas que tiene el ser obeso. El enfoque principal de la investigación es a nivel del tejido adiposo y las células que lo componen, para comprender el desarrollo de las alteraciones que se producen en el obeso. Específicamente, esta investigación se enfoca en la proteína Receptor Sensor de Calcio, cuya función principal es controlar los niveles circulantes de calcio, y para el cual se han estudiado numerosas otras funciones en diversos órganos. Nuestro laboratorio describió su presencia en el tejido adiposo en el año 2005, y desde entonces, hemos explorado el papel de este receptor en este órgano.
